Introduction to the Discipline of Civil Engineering
The master’s degree program of Civil Engineering, a first-class subject of Northeast Forestry University, was approved in 2010. It also includes three second-class subjects: bridge and tunnel engineering, structural engineering, and geotechnical engineering. It also can grant two master’s degrees of communication and transportation engineering, as well as architectural and civil engineering. The bridge and tunnel engineering subject was built in 2003 based on master’s degree program of the forest road and bridge engineering which was approved by the State Education Commission in 1983. The structural engineering program and geotechnical engineering program were approved in 2006 and 2011 respectively. The civil engineering first level master’s degree subject has one Key Laboratory of Heilongjiang Province and three engineering institutes, and covers the undergraduate civil engineering major (road and bridge engineering direction and structural engineering direction) and construction environment and equipment engineering major. The civil engineering major is an "excellence program" major approved by the Ministry of Education, which not only passed professional assessment set up a joint 3+1+1 program with the University of Colorado Denver(CUD) of USA in 2011. In 2016, the subject level was assessed as a regional first-rate civil engineering subject.

Orientation and Target

1. Orientation

Based on the region and combined with the needs of regional economic development, the science research and technology breakthrough in civil engineering and related sciencefields will be actively developed bytracking advanced technologiesand highlighting the characteristics of the seasonally frozen region. The main featured research directions of the civil engineering first-class subject will reachdomestic advanced leveland the overall level of the subject will reach the domestic well-known subject. Senior technical personnel of civil engineering will be cultivated with a solid foundation, broad knowledge,and professional independent scientific research ability,capable of teaching, scientific research and management work in the field of civil engineering.

2. Target

The subject will highlight the research characteristics of seasonally frozen regionsand renewable energy structures, constantly improve the layout of the researchfield and strive to make the development level of science and technology reach the domestic well-known subject and make the civil engineering structure of the seasonally frozen region, materials research, composite materials with renewable forestry energy, and the application research of green material to reach the leading domestic level. The disaster prevention and reduction engineering subject will be strengthened. The subject will make the following research including the mechanisms of wind effects and flow control of flexible structures, the new technology and methods of the structural seismic performance, the simulation of fire and explosionenvironments and post-disaster assessment and repair technology to reach the domestic advanced level.

Subject Orientation

The civil engineering master’s degree program consists of 3 second-class master’s programs including bridge and tunnel engineering, structural engineering and geotechnical engineering and 15 research directions. The second-class subject of earthquake defense and hazard reduction is planned to begin in 2017. This subject has a number of academic leaders and experts with influence and prestige. Professor Yu Tianlai as the academic leader is the editorial board member of Journal of Northeast Forestry University, the director Chinese and foreign highway,the deputy director of the technical committee of the key laboratory of construction and maintenance technology of the seasonal frozen soil region, amember of the technology expert database of the Ministry of Education, amember of the expert database of the Science and Technology Department of Heilongjiang Province and the member of teaching material construction committee of transportation and engineering bridge engineering direction of higher education. The subject has 40 teachers, including 10 professors, 20 associate professors and 10 lecturers,with70% of teachers possessing doctoral degrees. The subject has hired12 famous domestic and foreign scholars as part-time professors, including Dr. Li Chengyu who is the technical director of American URS Company and Dr.Xu Gongyi of Institute of Survey and Design of China Railway Bridge who is the national engineering Survey and design master. The bridge and tunnel engineering tutor team was awarded the2013~2014 provincial teaching team.

(1)The undergraduate majorrelying onthe civil engineering first-class subjecthas a long history (2) The relatively stable research directions were formed with prominent features of cold regions and geographical advantage; (3) The cold area highway engineering technology laboratory which is the key Laboratory of Heilongjiang Province and experimental teaching demonstration Center of Heilongjiang province provide a high-quality experimental platform; (4) It has big social demand and enough research funding;(5) A wide range of contacts and cooperation with many other foreign universities and research institutions have been established, i.e. South Korea Chonnam National University, Korea EC Research Institute and University of Colorado Denver(CUD);(6) The close cooperative relationships with the enterprises have beenestablished, i.e.LongjianRoad and bridge Limited Corporation and Institute of Highway Survey and Design of Heilongjiang Province, and the scientific research platforms between school and enterprises.

2. Characteristics

(1) Bridge and tunnel engineering:bridge load transverse distribution theory, bridge durability in cold regions, health diagnosis and reinforcement of bridges,interaction of ice and structure, integral bridgesin cold region, pile foundations in permafrost and seasonal frozen regions, long span bridge monitoring and Frost resistance of foundation.

(2)Structuralengineering: pre-stressed concrete structures in cold regions, reinforcement technology of existing structures in cold regions, pre-stressed wood structures and rice straw boards, laminated bamboo structures, generalized pre-stress theory systems and pre-stressed composite structures.

(3)Geotechnical engineering: soft soil foundationtreatment in cold regions, new materialapplication of geotechnical engineering in cold regions, highway ecological restoration technology, plant protection technology of roadbed side slopes, old road widening foundation treatment technology, disaster prevention of geotechnical engineering, stability analysis of highway slopes in seasonally frozen regions and permafrost regions and frozen soil engineering.

(4) Disaster prevention and reduction engineering and protective engineering: wind of flexible structures, the combined effect of rain multiphase flow, wind effect flow control techniques, new methods and new technology of improving seismic performance, research and development of new technology and new equipment of rescue, fire, and explosion environment simulation and post disaster assessment and repair technology.

Personnel Training Objectives and Quantity

The training objectives of the subject are to cultivate research and application compound professionalsand to cultivate scientific innovation spirit, broad discipline perspective, rigorous academic attitude, excellent study style and academic morality of students. The students also should master the basic theories and specialized knowledge in the civil engineering field, and have a certain understanding of the current situation and development trends of this subject. The subject will cultivate students' working ability of teaching, scientific research, engineering design and other engineering technologies, etc.

The subject has 130 postgraduate students, and hastrained nearly 300 graduate students for the country. Most of the graduate students have become the professional academic backbone, and nearly 20 graduate students enrolled in the University of Kansas, the University of Colorado, Tongji University and other famous universities at home and abroad for pursuing aPh.D. degree.

Level and Results of Scientific Research

In recent years, the subject has looked at the combination ofproduction, learning and research, and undertaken more than 30 researchprojects including the National Natural Science Foundation, the natural science foundation of Heilongjiang Province, China Postdoctoral Science Fund,the science and technology research project of the Ministry of Communications and key science and technology projects of the Department of Transportation of Heilongjiang Province. The total research budget is more than 10 million yuan. In the past five years, 5provincial or departmental science and technology progress awards were obtained, and there were more than 160 papers published, including three major retrieval papers and A+core journals papers. Therewere8 monographs and textbookspublished and a number of patents authorized by the state.

Main Influence and Social Service at Home and Abroad

The subject has established a wide range of contacts and cooperation with many other foreign universities and research institutions, and invited many experts,such as Professor Li Chengyu of the University of Colorado Denver(CUD,USA), Professor BianHanglong of South Korea E & C Research Institute, Professor Wu Chong of Tongji University and other domestic and foreign well-known scholars, to carry out academic exchange activities.A large number of technical services have been developed in the following fields such as detection and reinforcement of old structures and large span bridge monitoring, which have made an important contribution to the development of the regional economy andreceived the praise of society.
