Recently, a cultural performance “Ode to the Party - Sail on a New Journey” was held by Heilongjiang provincial authorities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Party. Unlike previous performances, this one was carbon neutral.

According to the calculations of NEFU Professor Huang Yingli’s Carbon Economy Team, the performance would emit 220 tons of carbon dioxide. After the performance, 378 mu of water willow would be planted by the Longjiang Forest Industry Group Co, Ltd. in the 22nd forestry field of Hailin Forestry Bureau, which was expected to offset the emissions of this activity over the next 6 years and then achieve net zero emissions.

The performance was attended by more than 8,000 party members and cadres from 96 provincial authorities. In order to promote the new social trend of low carbon life, entrusted by the Provincial Development and Reform Commission, the NEFU Carbon Economy Team designed the carbon neutral plan for this event, in which the greenhouse gas emissions accounting boundary was clearly defined and the carbon emissions of this event were accounted for in terms of fuel combustion, electricity, transportation, and clothing, based on the number of participants, schedule and venue settings. The organizers decided the number of replacement trees based on accounting equivalents. Beijing Zhongchuang Carbon Investment Technology Co, Ltd., a national-level greenhouse gas voluntary emission reduction validation and trading certification agency, issued the carbon neutral certificate for the event.

Achieving peak carbon by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060 is a major strategic decision made by the Party Central Committee after careful consideration, which concerns the sustainable development of China and the human community. Zhang Qingwei, the Secretary of the Heilongjiang Provincial Party Committee, also stressed that we should adhere to ecological priority, green and low-carbon development. Zhang Zhikun, Secretary of the Party Committee of NEFU, said that our university should play the professional advantages and provide technical support to society to achieve this historical goal together. The professor team helped the government achieve carbon neutrality in this event, which will enhance the awareness of carbon emissions among cadres and create a new fashion of low-carbon life. It is also a practice of learning history and serving the community through party history learning in our university.
