On August 9th, the international seminar on engineering geological and geo-environmental issues in permafrost regions against the backdrop of climate change & International Consortium on Landslides third academic conference on landslide research network in cold regions sponsored by Cold Region Science and Engineering Institute of NEFU, International Consortium on Landslides (ICL), International Program on Landslides—Global Promotion Committee (IPL-GPC) and World Center of Excellence on Landslide Risk Reduction (WCoE)—Research Center for Landslides in Cold Regions was held in Harbin. Zhou Hongli, vice president of NEFU was present at the conference on behalf of our university and delivered an address at the opening ceremony. The heads and leaders of functional departments of NEFU including the Science and Technology Institute, International Exchange Department, Engineering Consulting and Design Institute Co., Ltd, along with academic leaders of relevant disciplines, doctoral and master’s degree candidates attended the conference. Prof. Shan Wei of NEFU presided over the opening ceremony.
Prof. Nicola Casagli, vice president of International Consortium on Landslides, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Florence, Italy, Marina Leybman, a chief scientist of Earth Cryosphere Institute, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, Marten Geertsema, a chief expert on disaster prevention techniques of the Forest Service, British Columbia, Canada, Prof. Sun Fubao, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Niu Fujun, vice director of the national key laboratory of frozen soil engineering, Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhang Mingyi, a researcher of the national key laboratory of frozen soil engineering, Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Li Tonglu, College of Geological Engineering, Geodesy and Geomatics, Changan University and Prof. Shan Wei, director of the Cold Region Science and Engineering Institute, NEFU respectively delivered academic reports on the cutting-edge issues around the globe including climate change and global hydrothermal situation, monitoring and early-warning technology for distribution of frozen ground and changes in surface feature based on spaceborne radar, mechanism of degradation of frozen ground and the consequent engineering and environmental issues, prediction and engineering strategies about the evolution of thermal disasters. The experts present at the conference conducted an animated and in-depth discussion about the relevant topics.
