A progress meeting for the compilation of the Encyclopedia of China Forestry was recently held in Beijing, where the Forest Engineering Volume, edited by Professor Dong Xibin of Northeast Forestry University’s (NEFU) School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, was officially launched. Feng Jiaping, Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of China Forestry, and Wang Zhen, Director of the Publicity Center of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, attended the meeting and delivered addresses. Yang Bo, General Manager of China Forestry Publishing House, gave a speech. Zhang Shougong, Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of China Forestry and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Wu Yiqiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the chief editors, and the secretary-generals of the various volumes participated in the meeting online. Dong Xibin, Chief Editor, and Zhang Qunli, Secretary-General of the Forest Engineering Volume Editorial Board, attended in person. Shao Quanxi, Editor-in-Chief of China Forestry Publishing House, chaired the meeting.
Professor Dong Xibin, representing the Forest Engineering Volume Editorial Board, gave remarks at the launch event. He spoke fondly of the extraordinary six-year journey to compile the volume. Since the establishment of the editorial board in October 2018, over 70 high-level experts in the field of forest engineering from institutions such as Beijing Forestry University, Northeast Forestry University, Nanjing Forestry University, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, Southwest Forestry University, Central South University of Forestry and Technology, and Inner Mongolia Agricultural University joined the editorial and review team, working diligently and meticulously on the compilation. The successful publication of the Encyclopedia of China Forestry: Forest Engineering Volume was made possible through the organized efforts and careful guidance of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the General Editorial Board and Editorial Department of the Encyclopedia of China Forestry, and China Forestry Publishing House. It could not have been completed without the strong support of the Forest Engineering Society of the Chinese Society of Forestry and, of course, the hard work of the dedicated editorial and review team. The volume's publication is the culmination of these combined efforts, fulfilling a long-held aspiration of forestry researchers and professionals in China.
The Forest Engineering Volume is divided into 10 sections, including forest harvesting, forestry cableways, timber transportation, and others, comprising 681 entries. It provides a systematic overview of forest engineering knowledge and a comprehensive summary of the latest scientific and technological advances in the field. It holds significant academic value and offers practical guidance for professionals. The official publication of this volume represents an essential milestone in the compilation of the Encyclopedia of China Forestry and is a landmark event for China's forest engineering sector. Future efforts will focus on expanding publicity and promotion, leveraging new media platforms to highlight the volume’s key contributions and content.
The Encyclopedia of China Forestry is a foundational and strategic cultural undertaking of great importance in China's forestry and grassland sector. It is the first forestry encyclopedia in Chinese history and the world’s most comprehensive and extensive forestry encyclopedia in terms of disciplinary coverage and content richness. The encyclopedia serves as a crucial platform and window for showcasing the ingenuity of Chinese forestry scientists and the knowledge and achievements of Chinese forestry science and technology to a global audience. It also offers a wealth of material and content for communicating China’s green development narrative. The complete encyclopedia encompasses 24 volumes, including General Contents, General Index, the Comprehensive Volume, Forestry Policies and Regulations, Basic Forestry Science, Forest Ecology, Forest Engineering, and others, with approximately 24,000 entries. Over 4,000 forestry experts and scholars, including academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, are contributing to the compilation of the various volumes. The compilation of the remaining volumes is currently progressing steadily.
