On August 2nd, the International Seminar on “Sustainable Forest Management against the Backdrop of Global Changes” was held in NEFU. Experts and scholars in the field of forestry from 15 countries got together in NEFU with the purpose of conducting an in-depth discussion about the restoration and reconstruction of forest ecosystem under the background of global changes coupled with the latest research findings in the sustainable management and the service function of forest ecosystem.
Prof. Liu Shirong, president of the eighth division of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Forestry and president of the Ecological Society of China, Prof. TimoPukkala, College of Forestry, East Hogeschool INHolland, Li Bin, president of NEFU, Zhou Hongli, vice president of NEFU and Li Fengri, dean of the College of Forestry, NEFU attended the opening ceremony. Prof. Yang Chuanping, chairman of the organization and academic board of the seminar, former president of NEFU presided over the opening ceremony.
Yang Chuanping pointed out that as the principal component of terrestrial ecosystem, forest ecosystem plays a pivotal role in the global ecosystem. The in-depth exploration in the restoration and reconstruction of forest ecosystem, sustainable management of ecosystem and the service function of ecosystem against the backdrop of global changes is the foundation for forestry to cope with global transformations, which is also a necessary requirement to realize the harmonious coexistence between man and nature and the sustainable development of social ecology. This seminar, jointly held by the eighth division of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations, Ecological Society of China and NEFU, is aimed at delving into the international frontier and hot issues in the research on sustainable forest management under the background of global changes, probing into the practical challenges faced by sustainable forest management in this context, determining the goal and direction for future development, fully displaying and exchanging the up-to-date achievements and progress of sustainable forest management, enhancing the international exchange and cooperation in terms of the research on sustainable forest management, uniting all the strength for sustainable forest management and fostering the healthy growth of the youth in this domain.
Prof. Liu Shirong, president of the eighth division of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Forestry and president of the Ecological Society of China introduced the International Union of Forest Research Organizations. He stated that forest plays a crucial role in ecosystem and an irreplaceable part in healthy environment, climate change, biodiversity and conservation of water and soil. Concerned with ecological safety and international environment, it is an issue of vital importance and extreme urgency for China to recognize how to restore forest resources, improve the current service function of forest ecology and realize the sustainable management of forest ecosystem in the context of global climate change. He hoped that this seminar could serve as a platform for exchange and communication and provide a solid guarantee for the formulation of policies for forest ecosystem management and the extensive exploitation of forest.
Prof. Li Bin, president of NEFU, delivered an address at the opening ceremony, extending a warm welcome to the experts and scholars who came all the way to attend the seminar, briefly introducing NEFU to the attendees, and wishing this seminar a great success with substantial achievements.
During the seminar, Prof. Liu Shirong, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, Prof. TimoPukkala, East Hogeschool INHolland, Prof. Sven R Mutke, National Institute of Research and Agrofood Technology, Spain, Prof. Ron Ayling, Canadian Academy of Forestry, Prof. Wang Xiaochun, NEFU and Prof. Jyotish Prakash Basu, West Bengal State University respectively presented speeches on “Cultivation and Management of Man-made Forest in China”, “Coniferous Trees or Deciduous Trees?”, “Multi-purpose Management of the Sustainable Ecosystem of Italian Stone Pines in the Mediterranean Region of Europe under the Background of Global Changes”, “Sustainable Forest Management in Canada”, “The Responses of Radial Growth of Major Tree Species in the Northeast of China to Rapid Climate Warming” and “ A Research on Forest Regions Vulnerable to Drought in West Bengal, India”.
In the afternoon, the participants were divided into three groups to discuss the restoration and reconstruction of forest ecosystem against the backdrop of global changes, the sustainable management of forest ecosystem in the context of global changes as well as the service function of forest ecosystem under the background of global transformations.
