Recently, the Second Asian Science and Technology Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction was held in Beijing. Experts, academics, policy makers and business representatives from relevant departments of the United Nations and the fields of disaster risk reduction and emergency management in Europe, America and Asia were present at the conference. The attendees totaled about 300. Prof. Shan Wei and Dr. Guo Ying from NEFU were invited to attend the conference and deliver academic reports on special topics.

The conference was co-sponsored by China National Commission for Disaster Reduction, Ministry of Civil Affairs, Ministry of Emergency Management, Beijing Normal University and United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, co-hosted by Academy of Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management, Ministry of Civil Affairs and Ministry of Education, Beijing Normal University and National Disaster Reduction Center, Ministry of Emergency Management and co-organized by Integrated Research on Disaster Reduction (IRDR), United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Chinese National Committee for Future Earth (CNC-FE) and Geographical Society of China (GSC).

The theme of the conference is Dialogue between Science and Policy on the Implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.The attendees shared and exchanged experiences in Asia and countries all over the world on the two topics “How to Boost the Development of Scientific and Technological Innovation in the Field of Disaster Reduction” and “How to Facilitate the Application of Science and Technology in Disaster Reduction”so as to further enhance the collaboration between  governments in Asia and academics in the domain of disaster reduction by harnessing science and technology as well as advance the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in Asia.

Zheng Zhiguang, Director of China Earthquake Administration, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Emergency Management delivered the opening address. The message of congratulation from Madam Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Disaster Reduction Affairs, was announced at the conference. Renowned scholars from home and abroad such as Academician Qin Dahe, Academician Fu Bojie and Academician Cui Peng respectively delivered academic reports on relevant topics. Prof. Shan Wei and Dr. Guo Ying from NEFU were invited to attend the conference. They gave academic reports on special topics and conducted extensive and in-depth exchanges with other experts and scholars on related topics.

During the conference, it was initiated for the relevant departments of the United Nations, governments and all sectors of the community to bolster the development of scientific and technological innovation in the field of disaster reduction, intensify the interdisciplinary and comprehensive research on disaster risk reduction, enhance the development of disaster reduction technology and the participation of the scientific community in disaster prevention and reduction, accelerate the construction of demonstration projects of disaster reduction technology, increase the input of governments and all sectors of the community in the development of disaster reduction technology, expand the support for the international cooperation on the institutional innovation of disaster reduction by harnessing science and technology and advance the gradual realization of the 2030 Global Goal for Disaster Reduction set by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction depending on the innovative achievements of disaster reduction technology in a wide range of areas, including nature, society, economy and medicine.
