Recently, new varieties of ornamental plants cultivated by our teachers have appeared on campus, not only beautifying the environment and improving the cultural taste, but also showing the joyful mood of teachers and students welcoming the National Day, celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and commemorating the victory against COVID-19 in China.
Chrysanthemum has been a traditional Chinese flower since ancient times. As a graceful and beautiful flower, it does not charm with its delicate posture, but stands out with its elegance and chastity, blooming after all other blossoms have faded away. People love it for its delicate charm, and even more for its excellent qualities of cold-resistance and frosty blooming, which also symbolize the virtues of Chinese people. This year, the Campus Construction Office selected 11 varieties of chrysanthemums in cold area, 8 varieties of ornamental chrysanthemums such as Golden Queen, Purple Jade, Green Emerald, Yellow Lover and 16 other plant varieties cultivated by the NEFU faculty, totaling more than 17,000 plants, to form a chrysanthemum-dominated autumn flower show in several regions on campus and along the road.
The blooming of flowers and teaching and research activities complement each other. In the spring, a sea of colorful spring and summer flowers was planted in the former coal yard; in the autumn, a splendid chrysanthemum show is set up in the region of the ice stadium, and most of the plants selected are composed of the teaching and research achievements of our faculty. The plants and flowers on display include the open field chrysanthemum, chrysanthemum in cold area, and kale studied by Professor Li Yuhua and her team of the College of Life Sciences; the North American cedar and new iris variety “NEFU No. 1” selected by Professor Wang Ling and her team ofthe College of Landscape Architecture; physocarpus amurensis, Korean boxwood and North American holly selected by the garden plant application team of the College of Landscape Architecture; 2 themed plant design works of students under the guidance of Associate Professor Yue Liran of the College of Landscape Architecture; taxus cuspidata, purple maple, green maple, purple rain birch bred by Associate Professor Zhao Xiyang and his team; new Populus alba variety “Glory No.1” created by Professor Liu Guifeng and his team; Betula schiata bred by optimizing team; chicken tree viburnum bred by Associate Professor Li Shujuan and her team; African castor oil plant collected by Professor Zheng Zhimin and his team.
This autumn, the campus environment construction work has been combined with the scientific research of teachers to provide experimental sites and build platforms to display and promote the results of their teaching and scientific research. Additionally, by working together with students, we have achieved the purposes of environmental education and service-based education .
