From April 17th to 19th, the Final of the 17th Chinese Mathematics Competition for College Students was held in Chengdu, where students from Northeast Forestry University (NEFU) achieved outstanding results. Wang Yutian, a 2023 undergraduate majoring in Electrical Engineering and Automation, won the National First Prize (Category A for Non-Mathematics Majors) and ranked among the top 20 nationwide, marking a historic breakthrough for the university at this level of the competition. Song Yuxi and Zhao Bing, both majoring in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, won the National Second Prize and Third Prize, respectively, in the senior undergraduate group.
Since its launch in 2009, the Chinese Mathematics Competition for College Students has attracted more than 2.45 million participants. This year’s competition featured 32 regional divisions and drew over 352,000 undergraduate students from 1,322 universities. After multiple rounds of selection, 1,366 students from 379 universities advanced to the final. The competition has been included as an affiliated event of the 2025–2026 National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition, further expanding its influence in academic contests. It has become one of the largest foundational discipline competitions among Chinese universities. NEFU organized more than 1,000 students to participate in the preliminary round. Following evaluation by the Heilongjiang provincial organizing committee, three students were selected to represent the province in the final.
In recent years, NEFU has leveraged its distinctive strengths as a forestry-focused university and advanced the development of foundational mathematics courses by establishing a teaching model that integrates competition and learning. The university has consistently used academic competitions to enhance classroom teaching. Amid AI-empowered educational innovation and ongoing curriculum reform, it continues to improve public mathematics courses, strengthen students’ mathematical foundations, and support the cultivation of high-level innovative and technically skilled talent. Before the competition, the university assembled a dedicated team of instructors to provide systematic training, organize specialized coaching sessions, and offer elective courses to deliver targeted academic guidance, strengthen students’ logical thinking, and enhance their overall competencies and core competitiveness.
