1.Title:Temptation on the Other Side—Cultural Context and Literary Translation

About the Speaker 

Jin Bing, professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of International Studies, director of the Institute of British and American Literature, and member of the Academic Committee of the University of International Business and Economics. She is also the member of the National Council of American Literary Studies, included in the New Century Outstanding Talents supporting Project of the Ministry of Education, won the Excellent Teacher award of Beijing and the title of Outstanding Young Scholar of UIBE. She obtained her bachelor, master and doctoral degree in the School of Foreign Languages of Peking University. She once worked as Fulbright senior research scholar at Columbia University, studied in the University of Wisconsin, the Leiden University, and the University of Warwick as the visiting scholar. She was invited to give lectures in the University of Pennsylvania, the City College of New York, the University of North Georgia, the Florida International University, and some domestic universities. She also acted as the keynote speaker in many foreign and domestic academic symposiums. She has hosted national social science projects and some provincial and ministerial level projects. Three monographs have been published, so have papers in Foreign Literature Review, Study of Foreign Literature, Foreign Literature, Modern Foreign Literature and other authoritative core journals. Her research results have been reprinted in the copy database for social science of Renmin University of China. In 2010, she won the second prize of the Eleventh Excellent Achievements in Philosophy and Social Science of Beijing.

About the Speaker 

Kendall A. Johnsonis an associate professor, who obtained his doctoral degree in the Department of English, the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. He once was awarded Fulbright Scholarship. In 2007, he worked as the associate professor in the Department of English, Swarthmore College. Now he is the School Head of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures of HKU. His professional affiliations and reading groups include: Modern Language Association (MLA), American Studies Association (ASA), Faculty Working Group in American Studies (Tri-College), Americanist Reading Group (University of Pennsylvania), and Delaware Area Working Group in American Literature (University of Delaware). His teaching and research areas include: American literature and studies, colonial through early-twentieth centuries, Native American literatures, race studies, law and U.S. literature, anthropology and literature, visual aesthetics, postcolonial theory, urban studies, and the history of the novel. In the past four years, he had trained four excellent doctoral students and three master students.

Kendall A. Johnson published four monographs, 19 papers in journals likeAmerican Literature, Modern Fiction Studies, and Twentieth Century Literatureetc.He made more than 50 speeches on free trade, Sino-US economy, culture etc. in many universities like the University of Hong Kong, the University of Macao, Sun Yat-sen University, Jinan University etc. He was also interviewed on the topics of American politics, literature and Sino-US economy etc. by Backchat.
