Title: The Controllable Preparation and Functional Application of Amphiphilic Biomass

Speaker: Wang Xiaohui

Time: 9.00 a.m. Wednesday, November 29th, 2017

Venue: Conference Room 604, Engineering Building

About the Report

The transformation of the biomass of renewable resources into high value-added materials via green technology is of vital significance to the fulfillment of efficient utilization of resources and sustainable development. The report introduces the controllable modification method regarding the homogeneous phase of biomass materials such as cellulose, semi-cellulose and chitosan, the molecular designing and preparation of the derivatives of amphiphilic biomass with distinct molecular structures and functional groups. It also explores the application of amphiphilic biomass and its self-assembled aggregates in the fields of food, biological medicine and sensor technology.

About the Speaker

Wang Xiaohui, professor of South China University of Technology, tutor for Ph.D. candidates, graduated from the School of Resource and Environmental Sciences, Wuhan University with her doctoral degree in 2006. From 2006 to 2009, Prof. Wang Xiaohui conducted research in Washington University and the Public Health Laboratory of Washington. In 2009, Prof. Wang Xiaohui joined the College of Light Industry Science and Engineering, South China University of Technology, selected in the Program of Outstanding Young Scholars by the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Program of New Century Excellent Talents by the Ministry of Education of China, the Special Support Program of Guangdong Province and the Thousand-Hundred-Ten Talent Cultivation Program of the Higher Institutions in Guangdong Province. Prof. Wang Xiaohui is engaged in the research on biomass-based materials, conducting in-depth research in a wide range of fields including biomass modification and assembly, biomass hybridization coupled with biomass carbon materials; preparing a variety of new biomass-based materials with special structures and functions by means of the self-assembly of biomass molecules; applying them in the emerging high value-added domains involving anticancer drug delivery, ultra-sensitive fluorescent sensing, antibacterial agents, bioluminescence imaging as well as disease diagnosis; developing biomass porous carbon with controllable porous structure and fluorescent carbon quantum dots via thermal treatment and utilizing them in energy storage, absorption and biological fields. Prof. Wang Xiaohui has published more than 70 SCI research papers with the citation of over 1500 times, winning 1 Second Prize of the Natural Science Award by the Ministry of Education, presiding over more than 10 research programs at national, ministry and provincial levels and granted 11 patents.
