Recently, the results of the Preliminary Contest of the 8thNational Mathematics Competition for University Students have been made public. In this contest, NEFU contestants won 2 first prizes, 9 second prizes in the group of mathematics majors as well as 15 first prizes at the provincial level; 2 first prizes, 11 second prizes and 23 third prizes in the group of non-mathematics majors, along with 23 first prizes and 16 second prizes at the provincial level. Xu Bo, majoring in civil engineering, is qualified to participate in the final for the group of non-mathematics majors, which will be held in the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) in March, 2017.

The National Mathematics Competition for University Students is initiated by the Chinese Mathematical Society (CMS) to arouse college students’ interest in mathematics, advance the reform and development of the mathematics curriculum in institutions of higher learning, elevate the teaching level of mathematics courses in universities, seek and select innovative talents in mathematics. The Competition has been highly valued and vigorously supported by the leaders of the Office of Academic Affairs and the College of Science. The Mathematics Department publicized extensively, selected conscientiously, and assigned core teachers to give contestants meticulous guidance before the Competition, which provides a powerful guarantee for the outstanding results. Through the Competition, our students’ passion for mathematics has been immensely motivated and our level of mathematics teaching has been given full play. (Zang Rui)
