Exchanging incisive insights, discussing international hot issues and stepping onto the global stage, the First NEFU Model United Nations Conference sponsored by College of Humanities and Law and NEFU Model United Nations Association was held from June 2ndto June 4th. More than 100 outstanding students from 11 universities including Renmin University of China, Heilongjiang University, Harbin Medical University, Harbin Normal University, Harbin University of Commerce and NEFU were present at this Conference.
Model United Nations Conference (MUN Conference) is the academic simulation of the general assembly of the United Nations and other multilateral agencies, a simulation-based educational activity for young citizens. In this activity, young students, acting as diplomats from different countries, take part in the “UN conferences” on international hot issues. Through participating in MUN Conference, students can acquire a better understanding of the structure, procedures and functions of the United Nations as well as the current major international issues, broadening global vision and improving overall quality. The first NEFU Model United Nations Conference provides a superb platform for NEFU students, especially Political Science and Public Administration majors to improve their knowledge system and practical capabilities.. Meanwhile, it also boosts the connotation and influence of NEFU campus culture.
Zhai Xuefeng, director of the Office of Academic Affairs, Qiao Fenghe, dean of the School of International Education and Exchanges and Gao Chunguang, secretary of the CPC Party Committee of the College of Humanities and Law addressed the opening ceremony respectively. Zhai Xuefeng thought highly of the positive role of MUN Conference in broadening students’ vision, cultivating their capacity and enhancing their quality; Qiao Fenghe, based on his own overseas work experience, shared three key words, globalization, cooperation among countries and state responsibility with the representatives and encouraged the students to build up the awareness of global citizens and undertake more accountability via MUN Conference; Gao Chunguang pointed out that this Conference was beneficial for NEFU students to explore the broader future with expansive vision, lofty aspiration and broad perspective and hoped this conference would be established as a distinctive activity of the College of Humanities and Law, contributing to the construction of NEFU campus culture. Luo Jiayi, secretary general of MUN Conference, a student of the College of Humanities and Law also delivered a speech at the Conference. The Conference was declared open after the Hammer Granting Ceremony.
The three-day MUN Conference discussed two principal themes, terrorism under the new situation, gender equality and women’s empowerment. The Conference set up English committee and Chinese committee. In accordance with the rules of procedure of MUN, the representatives made full preparation and skillfully chose the focus of discussion, which laid a solid foundation for their outstanding performance at the Conference. During the Conference, the representatives displayed their close attention to international affairs, professional analysis of hot issues and common pursuit of world peace and development and progress of human civilization.
On June 3rd, MUN Conference held a social event at the Student Activity Center of Yifengyuan Dining Hall. The venue featured simple but elaborate decoration and the performances were original and elegant. The representatives dressed up for the event and relaxed themselves after the stressful discussion. The social event provided an opportunity for them to show their talents and further enhance their friendship.
On June 4th, the Closing Ceremony of MUN Conference was held at Room 331, Wildlife Resources Building. Chengming, supervisor of MUN, a teacher of the Political Science and Public Administration Major, College of Humanities and Law delivered the closing address. Chengming made a brilliant comment on this MUN Conference and the performance of representatives, speaking highly of the positive significance of this Conference in expanding students’ vision, diversifying their knowledge and enhancing their quality.
