ESI (Essential Science Indicators) is a tool for the fundamental analysis and evaluation to measure the achievement effect of research and trace the trend of scientific development that is currently applied around the world. It is reported that there are 22 disciplines in the ESI database: highly cited papers are those whose citation frequencies are listed the top 1% in the relevant field; ESI hot papers refer to those SCI papers published within the last two years and the citation frequencies are included in the global top 0.1% within the latest two months. The five indicators, including ESI hot papers, the total of SCI/SSCI papers, highly cited papers, citation frequencies of papers and average citation frequency of papers, serve as a well-rounded measurement of the national and regional research level, academic reputation of institutions, academic influence of scientists and academic level of journals from distinct perspectives. ESI hot papers take the leading role in the academic research concerning a diverse range of disciplines and realms and act as one of the key indicators in terms of the evaluation of higher institutions in China and the ranking of academic subjects.
