From June 8th to 11th, the 9th CHINA OPEN was held in the East China University of Science and Technology. NEFU team constituted by 8 students of the College of Humanities and Law including Lan Xiaoyu, Liu Yongming, Li Wangyang, Zhu Bozhi, Liu Xinqi, Li Zhen, Feng Yuan and Liao Zhi competed with 141 teams of 48 universities such as Willamette University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Fudan University, Wuhan University and Sichuan University. After fierce competition, NEFU team qualified for the quarter-final and finally won the National Third Prize!
CHINA OPEN is one of the major debating events in China and the only international bilingual debate in Chinese and English all over the world, co-founded by Willamette University and Xi’an Jiaotong University in May, 2010 with the purpose of enhancing the development of debate activities and the communication among Chinese college students, elevating their critical thinking, boosting the cultural exchange between China and the West as well as promoting international friendship. The internationality, impartiality and academic standard of CHINA OPEN have been widely acknowledged. This CHINA OPEN is sponsored by the International Debate Education Association (IDEA) and co-hosted by the East China University of Science and Technology and Willamette University, adopting the competition system of British Parliamentary Debate stipulated by the International Debate Education Association (IDEA).
During the three days of the competition, NEFU team conducted heated debates with the teams of Chinese University of Hong Kong, Soochow University, Hainan University and Northwest University on the hot issues such as “American Diplomacy”, “Artificial Intelligence”, “Big Data”, “Phubber”, “Investigation on Tax Evasion Practices in the Film and Television Industry” and “Relation between Japan and DPRK”, etc., gained access to the quarter-final and finally won the National Third Prize. The excellent performance of NEFU team was highly acclaimed, escalating the influence of NEFU students in debate activities. Through participating in this competition, NEFU students have not only broadened their horizon, elevating their logical reasoning capability, language application ability as well as strain capacity, but promoted the academic exchanges between NEFU and other institutions of higher learning, displaying the outstanding performance of NEFU students.
