Recently, the 18th National Intelligent Car Competition for college students Outdoor Finals, hosted by Chinese Association of Automation and undertaken by the Intelligent Education Committee of CAA and Chongqing University of Post and Telecommunications, came to a great success. With excellent technical application and teamwork, the team from the NEFU College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering won three first prizes, one second prize and one third prize in the regional selection competition. Four teams entered the national finals and were awarded one national first prize and two national second prizes.

Since its launch in September, the competition attracted 1,156 teams from 209 national colleges and universities, including Harbin Institute of Technology, Wuhan University, Tongji University, Shandong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Jilin University, Southeast University, and Northeast Forestry University, with more than 5,000 competitors. The regional competition was divided into five regions: South, North, Hubei, Henan and Jilin. After a fierce competition, 296 teams finally stood out, and more than 1,000 college students participated in the national finals.

The National Intelligent Car Competition for college students is an exploratory engineering activity for college students nationwide under the guiding principle of “based on cultivation, emphasizing on participation, encouraging exploration and pursuing excellence”. The competition is listed in the “National Ranking of Discipline Competitions in Universities” issued by the Institute of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education.The Outdoor Specialized Competition has five different competitions: Outdoor ROS Unmanned Vehicle Race, Outdoor 5G Remote Driving Unmanned Vehicle Race, Outdoor Unmanned Bicycle Challenge, Intelligent Vehicle Creative Design Competition, and Outdoor Intelligent Driving Challenge, which are mainly to examine the intelligent control technology of unmanned vehicles, machine vision technology, ROS application of robot operating systems, and the application of new types of sensors, such as LIDAR and depth camera, SLAM, path planning, autonomous navigation and other advanced technologies.

The examination content of the outdoor competition is in-line with industrial demand. At the same time, it puts forward higher requirements on the comprehensive technical ability and innovative and practical ability of the participating students, which is of better practical significance for the cultivation of students. The College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering has always taken the cultivation of students’ practical ability and scientific and technological innovation ability as the top priority, and has continued to guide and support students to participate in a series of high-level competitions, not only promoting students’ technical ability but also enhancing their spirit of teamwork and scientific and technological innovation.
