After serving as a post-doctoral research associate at MTU and the University of Maine (UMaine), he joined APA-The Engineered Wood Association as a researcher and program leader, taking charge of the product certification and testing of engineering wood composite materials, and the development and utilization of new products. In 2004, he came back to academia, joining Mississippi State University (MSU) as an assistant professor. After seven years of service at MSU, Dr. Shi joined University of North Texas (UNT) as a cluster hiring and a tenured professor in 2011, and became the academic leader of Department of Biomass Materials Processing. He is the president of faculty council in the College of Engineering, and a member of Tenure and Promotion Committee at UNT at present.
Dr. Shi is experienced in the processing and evaluation of composite materials, especially renewable composite bioproducts, including engineered wood-based products and natural fiber composites. His research interests also include renewable bioproducts manufacturing, nanocomposites. Dr. Shi obtained the project ofDevelopment of Natural Fiber Composites for Light Vehiclesfunded by DEO. He also obtained competitive NSF projects, and various research projects funded by USDA and other national departments or companies. The entire project funds are over $10 million.Dr. Shi has published more than 170 journal papers and professional conference proceedings, which more than 130 of them have been published by SCI.He has been invited to give seminars over 60 times internationally. In 2012, his two journal paperswere awardedsecond and thirdexcellent paper prizes by GEORGE MARRA respectively. Dr. Shi achievedYoung Professor Research Awardby the College of Forest Resources,Mississippi State Universityin 2009, and achievedaresearch awardbyAutomotive Research CenterofMississippi State Universityin 2007.
Dr. Shi was the executive director for the Society of Wood Science and Technology (world leading level of wood science) from 2009-2015. From 2013-2014, he was selected as the president of SWST, who is the first Chinese American to serve as the president in its history.
