Brief Introduction  

The English major was started in 1985 and was recognized as a Heilongjiang provincial key program in 2011. It aims to cultivate practical talents with a solid English language foundation, a proficiency in English listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation, a profound background in humanity, a keen awareness of cross-cultural communication, a broad international horizon, an ability of self-learning and a strong sense of innovation who can fill positions in teaching, research, translation and the like in various departments and institutes related to education, scientific research, foreign affairs, trade, culture, tourism etc.

Its core courses include Essential English, Extensive Reading, English Listening, Oral English, English Writing, Advanced English, Theory and Practice of Chinese-English Translation, A General Introduction to English Linguistics, Selected Readings of British Literature and History and Selected Readings of American Literature and History.

It offers 5 online courses: Advanced English II, English Phonology, Selected Readings of American Literature and History, English Writing II and English Translation.

Characteristics

1. The program of English has a Second Level postgraduate program for English Language and Literature and a Masters for Translation and Interpretation, and has 8 postgraduate supervisors, accounting for 44% of the faculty.

2. It is a Heilongjiang provincial key program recognized in 2011.

3. It has a reasonably structured high-quality faculty team. It is comprised of 1 Post Doctor, 2 Ph.D.s, 1 Ph.D. candidate, 15 Masters, and 70% with overseas study experiences.

4. It has established joint educational projects withthe University of Western Australia (UWA). The projects of “2+2” pattern for undergraduates, “2+1” pattern for Academic Masters and “1+1” pattern for Masters for Translation and Interpretation have been progressing smoothly.

Students’ Prospect

Students can be admitted for degrees through the means of postgraduate recommendation, postgraduate application and overseas study. With 4 years of studies, graduates can fill the positions of secretary, translator, business personnel or administrative staff etc. in various departments and institutes related to foreign trade, foreign affairs, foreign-funded enterprises, transnational corporations, international trade and finance etc.

Postgraduate Recommendation and Postgraduate Application

18 undergraduates from the 2016 graduates have been admitted to other nationwide renowned universities for degrees.

Overseas Study

8 undergraduates from the 2016 graduates have gone abroad for further study.

Employment

The employment rate of the 2016 graduates is 89.74% and most of the students are employed in large cities such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, Shenzhen.

Specialists’ View

The program of English has emphases in cultivating the students to learn the basic knowledge of English language, literature, history and culture, to have the skill training in English listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation, to enhance the cross-cultural communication ability, thinking ability and research ability, to form a rich cultural heritage of the China complex, international horizon and humanity background, and to fully fill the positions of teaching, research, translation and management etc. Students have the opportunities to go abroad as exchange students during the 4-year study; after graduation they can apply for overseas studies or can be recommended for degrees to other key universities in China.

About the Specialist

Professor Dong Hui is a Ph.D., Postgraduate Supervisor, and Vice Dean of College of Foreign Languages. She has undertaken many provincial and ministerial projects, including Youth Foundation Project of Ministry of Education Humanity and Social Sciences and also participated in some projects supported by EU, the State Social Sciences Fund (in the charge of the National Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Sciences) etc. She has published many CSSCI-cited papers and won many awards such as the second place prize of Heilongjiang Higher Education Teaching Achievements Award and the NEFU Teaching Quality Award.

The program of English offers a wide range of courses, which can meet the needs of students in almost every aspect. The courses provide students with professional knowledge, broaden their horizons, and enhance their academic attainments and professional abilities. Varied and colorful extracurricular activities also help improve students' ability to use language.
