Overview of the College of Humanities and Law

I. Profile/History

Northeast Forestry University (NEFU) was founded in 1952. It is a university of “Project 211” (the Chinese Government’s endeavor to strengthen approximately 100 institutions of higher education and key disciplinary areas as a national priority for the 21st century) directly under the Ministry of Education, a university of the Innovation Platform for Advantageous Disciplines, and also a key university of the double first-level initiative.

The College of Humanities and Law originated from the Political Education Teaching and Research Section established in the early stages of NEFU in 1952. The Division of Social Sciences was established in 1985 and renamed the Department of Social Sciences in 1989. In 1997, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences was established. In 2010, it was renamed as the College of Humanities and Law. The college has four bachelor’s degree programs, including law, politics and public administration, advertising, and social work. In addition, it has one first-level program for the master of Laws (LLM) and two professional programs, including the master of Legal Studies (MLS) and social work.

II. Distinctive Features of Education

The college adheres to education with distinctive features and sets out the connotative development model, integrating quality, characteristics, and strength into a whole. The law major is a first-level bachelor’s program in Heilongjiang Province. With China’s third master’s program of law in environmental and resource conservation, this major has evolved into a first-level academic discipline system of law taking the law on environmental and resource conservation as its competitiveness, covering five academic disciplines (civil and commercial law, constitutional and administrative law, criminal law and law theory) and having the authorization to grant both academic degree and professional degree. In 2016, it was approved by the National Forestry Administration as a key (development) academic discipline. In 2019, it was accredited as a key construction discipline in the Heilongjiang Province's project for Philosophy and Social Science System Innovation. Political science and administration majors attach importance to fundamental theory research and practical skill development. It has finalized the model of training practical research-oriented talents based on steady growth. Most advertising always highlights public service and practice, and successfully develops the distinctive features of public-service advertising research and discipline competition. The social work major is always committed to “social governance” and “social development” and strives to develop inter-disciplinary talents capable of management, research, and practical affairs.

III. Faculty

Now, the college has 72 faculty members, including 62 full-time teachers, 53% of whom have a doctorate. There are also 10 professors, 28 associate professors, 33 master’s supervisors, and 40 external supervisors. Forty teachers have a doctoral degree, accounting for 65%. Twenty-two teachers have a master’s degree, accounting for 35%.

IV. Laboratory Construction

The college has invested more than RMB 5 million in the practical teaching center and successfully built multifunctional laboratories for the major of law, multifunctional laboratories for the major of social work (including group studio, case studio and sand table room), multifunctional comprehensive laboratories for the major of political science and administrative science (including group discussion room and sand table room), multifunctional laboratories for the major of advertising (including film and TV advertising production room, creative advertising practical training room and studio) and computer rooms to provide all the teachers and students with excellent experimental and practical teaching services.

V. Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The college vigorously promotes the innovation of the talent training mechanism, integrates innovation and entrepreneurship education into the whole process and each step of talent training, and gradually establishes a training mechanism that combines the professional teaching system with innovation and entrepreneurship education. The college actively encourages its teachers and students to participate in various innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, helping students improve their professional abilities. In recent years, the students from the college have won many individual awards and group awards in the National University Student Environmental Resources Moot Court Competition, “Huaihai Cup” National University Moot Court Competition, and the Chinese University Student Human Resources Vocational Skills Competition. Besides, the students majoring in advertising have won the first prize many times in the World Chinese University Student Creative Advertising Competition and the National University Student Advertising Art Competition. The students majoring in political science won one national first prize, two second prizes, and two third prizes in the University Student Human Resources Vocational Skills Competition.

VI. International Exchanges

NEFU has established partnerships with many famous universities, such as the University of Western Australia, Fu Jen Catholic University of Taiwan, National Taipei University, and Tunghai University. More than 20 students from the college attend international (overseas) exchanges and studies every year. It is also one of the first batches of NEFU’s colleges to implement international talent training. It has signed a joint training agreement with the University of Western Australia on 2+2 bachelor’s programs (double degree) of law, advertising, and social work.
