The College of Landscape Architecture at Northeast Forestry University was gradually established, evolving from the Landscape Architecture Teaching-Research Section and the Landscape Architecture Major founded in 1980. In 1998, it became an independent college. It has become one of China’s largest and most prestigious institutions, offering a comprehensive range of disciplines, strong competitive capabilities, and unique educational characteristics. The college provides three undergraduate programs: Landscape Architecture, Landscape Gardening, and Urban and Rural Planning. Additionally, it can confer professional doctoral degrees in landscape architecture, second-level doctorate degrees in ornamental plants and horticulture, first-level master’s degrees in urban and rural planning, and professional master’s degrees in landscape architecture.

The Landscape Gardening program has been awarded national-level characteristic specialty status, selected for the “National Outstanding Agricultural and Forestry Talents Training Program, " and designated as one of the first batches of national first-class undergraduate major construction sites. The Landscape Architecture program is recognized as a national first-class undergraduate program. It is a key major under the National Forestry and Grassland Administration and a principal major in Heilongjiang Province. The Urban and Rural Planning program is also classified as a first-class undergraduate program in Heilongjiang Province. Furthermore, the Landscape Architecture discipline is a key discipline of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, acknowledged as a key discipline in Heilongjiang Province, and regarded as a distinct and advantageous discipline within high-level universities in the region. In the 2016 National First-level Discipline Evaluation by the Office of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, the landscape architecture discipline of our college received a B+ rating. In the 2020-2021 China University Undergraduate Education Ranking by the Network of Science & Education Evaluation in China, the Landscape Gardening program ranked second among 152 universities with a score of 5★+, while the Landscape Architecture program ranked 15th among 186 universities with a score of 5★-.

The college has several teaching and research platforms at the provincial or ministerial level and above, including the Heilongjiang Key Laboratory for Garden Plant Germplasm Development & Landscape Eco-Restoration in Cold Regions, the Heilongjiang Landscape Gardening Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the National Forestry and Grassland Engineering Technology Research Center for Functional Grassland in Cold Regions, the National Landscape Architecture Science Education Base, the National Skill Master Studio, and the Heilongjiang Intangible Cultural Heritage Education Base.

The college actively explores the internationalization of education and has achieved significant results in international student education, faculty training, and academic exchanges. Currently, 24 full-time teachers have foreign educational backgrounds or study abroad experiences, and 13 international students have been enrolled in master's or doctoral programs. Until now, the college has already carried out various forms of cooperation, including joint training of undergraduate and graduate students and short-term academic exchanges, with universities in Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, South Korea, Japan, France, and other countries and regions. Besides, the college is actively applying to launch new joint education programs with countries such as Australia and Singapore. After years of hard work, the college has a particular global influence.
