Founded in 2003, the College of Life Sciences at Northeast Forestry University (NEFU) was established to strengthen the development of the National Base for Training Basic Science Talents” and “National Base for Life Science and Technology Talent Development”. Over two decades of dedicated efforts, the college has evolved into a high-level research-oriented institution centered on biology, with distinctive forestry characteristics, achieving remarkable accomplishments in innovative talent cultivation, cutting-edge scientific research, and societal contributions.
Distinctive Features and Academic Programs
The college boasts two national talent training bases and offers three undergraduate programs: “Biological Science”, “Biotechnology”, and “od Science and Engineering”. It holds a “first-tier doctoral authorization in Biology” a “aster’s authorization in Food Science and Engineering” and a “professional master’s degree in Biological and Pharmaceutical Engineering” along with a “postdoctoral research station in Biology” This forms a comprehensive "undergraduate-master-doctorate integrated, industry-academia collaborative" training model.
Faculty Excellence
The college employs 129 faculty and staff, including 83 full-time teachers (35 professors, 40 associate professors), 47 doctoral supervisors, and 83 master’s supervisors. Among them, 27 are high-level talents with overseas doctoral degrees or postdoctoral experience, and 56 have international academic backgrounds. The faculty includes 4 national-level distinguished experts, 2 recipients of the State Council Special Allowance, 2 CAS Hundred Talents Program scholars, 1 New Century Excellent Talent, 5 Longjiang Scholars (including Young Scholars), 2 provincial teaching awardees, 1 provincial leading talent team, and 1 recipient of the Heilongjiang May 1st Labor Medal.
Research Platforms and Achievements
The college hosts key research facilities such as the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Vegetation Restoration and Reconstruction in Northeast Saline-Alkali Land , the Heilongjiang Provincial Key Laboratory for Biosynthesis and Utilization of Plant Natural Active Substances , and the Heilongjiang Provincial Key Laboratory for Enzymes and Enzyme-like Substances . It also leads national innovation alliances, including the National Cold-Region Flower Industry Innovation Alliance and the National Innovation Alliance for Plant Natural Active Substance Utilization . The college’s Biology Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center features seven undergraduate laboratories and a shared biotechnology lab, equipped with over 4,000 instruments valued at more than 100 million yuan . In recent five years, the college has undertaken 4 national major/key projects , 42 National Natural Science Foundation grants , and secured over 100 million yuan in research funding . Faculty have published 400+ papers in top-tier journals like Nature Communications, *Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, and PNAS , obtained 70+ patents , and received 4 provincial/ministerial-level science and technology awards .
Industry and Societal Contributions
The college integrates foundational research with industrial applications, excelling in plant resource conservation , genetic breeding of northern forestry and ornamental plants , development of medicinal understory resources, microbial environmental remediation , and addressing soil salinization and grassland degradation in the Songnen Plain .
Talent Cultivation
With over 900 undergraduates , 700 graduate students , and 20+ international students , the college emphasizes fostering innovative, research-capable talents. Over 80% of undergraduates participate in innovation projects, life science competitions, and the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition . Since 2014, the iGEM team has consistently won gold medals, along with awards for Best Information Processing, Best Wiki, and Best Medical Diagnostics Track. Notable alumni include recipients of the China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award , top-performing "academic dormitories," and classes, with 60%+ undergraduates advancing to prestigious institutions like Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Fudan University .
Campus Culture and Outreach
Leveraging students' characteristics and talent development features, the College has consecutively organized the "Drama Festival" for fourteen years, establishing it as a prestigious brand activity university-wide. Since 2015, faculty and students have initiated the biological public welfare course "Little Droplet Public Welfare Classroom" for elementary students during winter and summer vacations. The program has been successively designated as a popular science education base by both Heilongjiang Province and Harbin City. These achievements have been extensively covered by mainstream media including China Youth Net, Sina.com, and China Green Times. Notably, the initiative was honored with the Liangxi Popular Science Award in 2021.
Global Collaboration
The college maintains partnerships with over 20 international institutions, including the University of Tokyo , University of Auckland , and University of Calgary . It has recruited 13 Chinese and foreign faculty members and sent 30+ young scholars to countries like the U.S., U.K., and Canada for academic exchanges, ensuring a globally oriented educational environment.
Vision for the Future
Over two decades of growth, the College of Life Sciences has made significant strides in talent development, research, societal service, and global engagement. Moving forward, it will continue to prioritize innovative education , research excellence , first-class discipline development , and international collaboration , aiming to become a world-renowned institution with distinctive forestry strengths.
