Program Overview
Animal Medicine is a specialized discipline focused on the philosophy of “One World, One Health.” This mission involves utilizing professional expertise to conduct epidemiological analyses, perform disease examinations, diagnose, and provide treatments for food-producing animals, farm animals, laboratory animals, companion animals, wildlife, and exotic animals. It also includes implementing quarantine and preventive measures for animal diseases.
Training Objectives
The educational objective of this program is to cultivate well-rounded professionals through moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education. Students will gain comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge in wildlife conservation medicine, preparing them to become high-level applied talents in China's wildlife protection, ecological security, safe livestock production, companion animal healthcare, public health, and animal-derived food safety industries.
Distinctive Advantages
First, the Animal Medicine program at our university is China’s first veterinary medicine specialization focused on wildlife medicine. It is supported by the Outstanding Agricultural and Forestry Talent Education Program and is recognized as a first-class undergraduate program at the provincial level in Heilongjiang Province.
Second, the program features a strong faculty, 88% of whom possess doctoral degrees, delivers significant scientific research outcomes, and upholds rigorous academic standards through a “whole-process, all-around, and full-coverage” educational philosophy.
Core curriculum
The core curriculum encompasses the following subjects: Animal Pathophysiology, Animal Pathological Anatomy, Animal Diagnostics, Animal Epidemiology, Animal Internal Medicine, Animal Surgery and Surgical Techniques, Animal Obstetrics, Animal-Derived Food and Public Health, Wildlife Parasitology, Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, and Animal Infectious Diseases.
Key practical components include comprehensive field studies in general zoology, a joint practicum in animal medicine, a graduation thesis project, and social practice activities.

Expert representative
Hua Yuping, Ph.D., is a professor and doctoral supervisor who founded our college’s Veterinary Medicine program. He is a member of the Teaching Guidance Committee for the Wildlife Conservation and Recreation Program within the Forestry Discipline, part of the National Steering Committee for Higher Education Institutions. Additionally, he serves as an expert member of the Wildlife Disease Surveillance and Monitoring Group under the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. Furthermore, he is a member of the Coronavirus Expert Group affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Xu Yujing, a female undergraduate who graduated in 2019, was recommended for admission to Zhejiang University in 2023 and received an exemption from the postgraduate entrance examinations.
Our university’s veterinary medicine program offers a specialization in wildlife with elective courses like “Introduction to Wildlife Conservation.” The curriculum encompasses a broad range of professional knowledge, enabling students to acquire expertise from various perspectives. This educational approach encourages scientific research interests and cultivates skills applicable to related industries, including nature reserves, zoos, and other professional fields.

Zhang Chunxia, Ph.D., is a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. She is also an alumna of the Wildlife and Nature Reserve College, Animal Medicine program, Class of 2006.
Li Yuanyuan, Ph.D., is a professor and doctoral supervisor in the Department of Veterinary Public Health at the College of Animal Medicine, Jilin University. She is an alumna of the Animal Medicine program, Class of 2007, at the Wildlife and Nature Reserve College.
