Foreign Language and Literature (First-Level Discipline 0502)

The College of Foreign Languages at Northeast Forestry University offers a master’s program in Foreign Language and Literature, encompassing four academic directions: English Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, and Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. In addition, the college has been authorized to offer a Master of Translation and Interpretation (MTI) program, with specializations in English translation, English interpreting, and Russian translation. There are 42 supervisors guiding master’s degree students. Currently, there are 247 graduate students enrolled.

Foreign Language and Literature (First-Level Discipline 0502)

English Language and Literature (050201):

The English Language and Literature program, authorized by the Heilongjiang Provincial Degree Committee in 2000, began enrolling students in 2002.

Research areas include interdisciplinary studies of literature and ethics, literary theory, literary topics, national literature, and genre studies. The program applies Western and Chinese ethical theories to demonstrate English literature's ethical significance and value in the interdisciplinary study of literature and ethics. Literary theory research focuses on Western classic theories, including those of figures such as Adorno and Arnold, as well as Marxist studies, disability studies, narratology, and ethics. Literary topics research encompasses ecological literature, forest literature, and ethnic literature. National and genre studies focus on Chinese-American literature, Shakespeare studies, Irish literature, and Southern American literature.

Russian Language and Literature (050202):

Research in Translation Theory and Practice: This area focuses on analyzing translation texts and solving translation problems while exploring the intersection of translation and linguistics.

Russian Linguistics: Research includes linguistic culture, contrastive linguistics, psycholinguistics, and political linguistics.

Russian Literature: The program emphasizes the study of classical Soviet-era literature, drama, and Russian literary theory.

Japanese Language and Literature (050205):

Linguistics: Linguistic research primarily involves theories such as cognitive linguistics, contrastive linguistics, cognitive semantics, and applied linguistics, focusing on practical issues and general patterns within these subfields. It also examines the pragmatic features of Chinese and Japanese, addressing practical problems in the research and application of the Japanese language in China and language teaching.

Translation Theory and Cross-Cultural Studies: Translation practice is the foundation of cross-cultural communication and enables the diversified development of cross-cultural studies. Translation theory and cross-cultural research aim to identify errors in actual translation by examining translation theories and investigating cross-cultural theories and practices. With an interdisciplinary research approach and a cross-cultural critical perspective, this research analyzes the causes of errors, addresses practical issues in Japanese-Chinese translation, and enhances translation practice capabilities in related fields by integrating the unique characteristics of the NEFU.

Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics (050211):

Established in 2006, this program includes English, Japanese, and Russian language research. It began enrolling students in 2007 and later separated into Russian Language and Literature and Japanese Language and Literature.

Language Theory and Application: This field focuses on pragmatics, functional linguistics, applied linguistics, cognitive linguistics, and cross-cultural language studies, addressing core issues and frontier topics related to language, cognition, education, and culture.

Foreign Language Education Research: Foreign language education research involves interdisciplinary studies on the theories, patterns, and methodologies of foreign language education, drawing on pedagogy, psychology, linguistics, and other relevant fields. It focuses on practical issues, such as foreign language teaching, curriculum design, and language testing, and studies the objective laws governing the foreign language teaching process.

Language Translation and Services: In the new era of artificial intelligence and machine translation, language translation and services emphasize theoretical research in language translation and translation services. They focus on promoting the development of NEFU’s strong disciplines and ecological civilization construction while supporting national strategies and local development.
