Landscape Plants and Ornamental Horticulture was founded in 1996, approved as a doctoral discipline in 2001, and selected as a national key discipline in 2009.
There are eight doctoral supervisors and 13 master's supervisors in the discipline, including nine professors and 10 associate professors, gathering the best teaching and scientific research talents in germplasm resources of ornamental plants and ecological benefits of landscape plants in northern China. Now it has a provincial key laboratory of germplasm resources development and landscape ecological restoration of horticulture plants in cold regions, a provincial teaching demonstration center of gardening, a national popular science education base of landscape gardening, a national skill master studio, an educational base of intangible cultural heritage of Heilongjiang Province and other scientific research and teaching platforms at provincial and ministerial levels. The laboratory area is more than 1200m2, and the total value of instruments is nearly 20 million yuan. More than 50 teaching and scientific research projects have been completed and are under research, and 11 provincial and ministerial level awards have been won. More than 300 papers have been published in SCI, CSSCI, CSCD, EI, and national Chinese core journals and above.
The discipline focuses on the research of cold land vegetation and plant resources in Northeast China, focusing on the research of ornamental germplasm resources of cold-resistant, drought-resistant and salinity-resistant, the research of ecological benefits of horticulture plants, such as oxygen absorption, dust retention and sterilization, the research of plant configuration pattern based on different functional characteristics and the research of horticulture plants cultivation technology. Through continuous construction and development, the discipline has formed the research directions of horticulture plants germplasm resources, application, and cultivation management.
